Community

Swarthmore College, USA

Students begin their college experience with a traditional celebration to bring the community together. (The college is actually Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, www.swarthmore.edu.)

Although silent worship entails ‘going within’, there is also a strong emphasis on sensitivity to what is around us and to the community – both the faith community and the larger community we live in. While each person can have a spiritual life alone, it’s both easier and healthier to share one’s life of faith in a community of like-minded people.

Friends believe that we can understand and hear God’s direction more accurately when we worship, listen and work together rather than exclusively on our own. Quaker concern for community embraces not only the Local Meeting, but also the wider Quaker network, family, local community, the national and international communities, the environment and all the species that live within it.
